A Mother’s Favourite Flowers
When it comes to thanking moms for all they do for us, most of us like to say “thank you” with flowers.
Mother’s Day is the number one holiday for floral sales each year, beating Valentine’s Day by a wide margin. North Americans spend more than $2.4 billion on floral arrangements alone during this holiday. More than 24% of the year’s floral sales are done during this holiday.
Holiday has expanded to include wives, daughters, sisters, mother-in-laws, godmothers, friends, grandmothers and other relatives today. Evolved into an occasion to say “thank you” to the women in your life.
Not surprisingly, Mother’s Day ranks #2 in terms of annual fragrance sales behind Christmas. Floral-themed scents are the best-sellers.
Last year, consumers spent more than $200 per person on Mother’s Day gifts, almost double what is was a decade ago. Most popular flowers include: roses, iris, orchids, tulips and lilies. Bright, bold colour combinations are the most popular selling arrangements.
The first Mother’s Day in America was observed with a church service on May 10, 1908 thanks to Anna Jarvis who wished to honour her deceased mother. Anna wore a pink carnation to the service as the flower was her mother’s favourite. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as National Mother’s Day.
