Bvlgari Le Gemme Gyan: an homage to the blue sapphire gemstone

Blue Sapphire

Italian jeweler Bvlgari is renowned for its expertise at combining colourful gemstones in unique patterns and designs. This knowledge is expressed in olfactory creations under the “Le Gemme” collection. These are rare and precious fragrances boasting the finest raw materials and each inspired by a different gemstone. They call it the “gemstone trail” and scent enthusiasts can actually take a scent journey across Asia, Europe and the Middle East where each stone is collected.

One of our favourites is called Gyan and it is an homage to the blue sapphire, a royal gemstone of spirituality and knowledge. It is said wearing or carrying this stone helps to bring insight and confidence to its owner.

Master perfumer Alberto Morillas is the artist selected to design an eau de parfum to reflect this precious gem. He often begins by studying the raw stones to get an idea of the brilliance, character and personality of the stone. As he observes, he gets immediate flashes of ingredients that best represent the gemstone.

Le Gemme Gyan eau de parfum is an olfactory tribute to the blue sapphire gemstone. It’s an exquisite woody-oriental fragrance for him that blends a crisp bergamot essence with uplifting orange essence from Sicily. It’s an optimistic and lively introduction to the carefully crafted scent. Surprisingly, the heart notes open with jasmine sambac, a heady white flower that is balanced nicely with Sichuan Pepper. The spicy kick of the pepper blends perfectly with the jasmine. Now, the base notes are where it gets interesting. A trio of confident notes appear: heart of patchouli from Indonesia, cedarwood and Oriental incense. These rich and strong ingredients convey a sophisticated character that is layered and intelligent.

What a dream adventure to be able to follow the “gemstone trail” and actually take a scent journey across Asia, Europe and the Middle East where each stone is collected. That is my kind of adventure. Love hearing about the thought process that goes into a fragrance. Kate Middleton engagement ring comes to my mind when you speak of the gorgeous blue sapphire gemstone.
