It’s not surprising to learn that during the covid lockdown of the past 18 months, there is one home accessory that has seen substantial sales: luxury scented candles. Prestige candles of all sizes and shapes have sold consistently well around the globe as consumers look to find ways to make their homes and apartments cozy and comfortable – particularly during the colder months when they are forced to stay inside more. Couple the fact that the sun sets just after 7 pm now and you have very early evenings. A good candle adds ambience and a wonderful aroma to a room.
Here’s our very favourite scented candle for fall 2021:
19-69 Chinese Tobacco Scented Candle
Swedish niche perfumery brand 19-69, created in 2017 by artist/photographer Johan Bergelin has blended one of the most comforting, cozy and warm fragrances of the year. Chinese Tobacco is a spicy, warm, woody scent for him or her that captures the legendary films Indochine and Apacalypse Now. The composition pays homage to the distinct contrasts in Asia: East meets West.
“I have always surrounded myself with creative people, personal friends as well as professional. What has always inspired me is how these artists very often stand up for their values,” explains Bergelin. “The name of the brand 19-69 is a very powerful statement. The year of 1969 represents an era of freedom, tolerance and counterculture. It is also the year I was born and my way of putting my heart on the sleeve and say – this is real. This is who I am.” The buzz-worthy niche fragrance brand is based in Sweden and offers some of the most interesting and complex scents on the market today. Johan has a rare talent of perfectly balancing a myriad of notes and ingredients into one cohesive fragrance that is truly unique and special. He just may be the next great niche perfumer.
The luxe 19-69 Chinese Tobacco scented candle is hand-poured in Italy and will burn for a full 48 hours.
Tips for shopping for quality scented candles:
When shopping for a good quality home candle, there are some tips to keep in mind. The first is burn-time. A good quality candle will burn for 40 to 50 hours and will have this fact listed on the packaging. This is affected by both the quality of the wax and the wick. The size of the flame also influences the longevity of the product. The ideal length of the flame is 1 to 1.5 cm; any longer and the candle will burn too quickly and could emit soot.
Speaking of soot, you don’t want to see any with any of the candles you invest in. The best quality candles don’t leave any soot. Nor do they drip. You don’t want to see any dripping from your candle.
Look for candles housed in glass. This helps the candle burn evenly prolonging its lifespan. And choose candles with cotton wicks which are generally considered best if you want to avoid soot or smoke.
